Mothercare was founded in 1961 in the UK, and was the first retailer to focus on the new baby and mother-to-be market. Over the years, Mothercare has expanded to cater for the childrenswear market, offering clothign for 2 to 10 years olds, as well as an assortment of toys, pushchairs, car seats, and other baby essentials.

It all came about when Selim Zilkha bought the Harris chain of pram shops in order to open the original Mothercare shops. The chain expanded quickly, and by the early 70’s there were over 100 Mothercare stores in the UK. this rapid expansion led to Mothercare becoming a pubic company in 1972.

Since 1984, Mothercare has worked with franchise partners, opening and operating stores outside the UK. As of today, ther are hundreds of stores all across Europe, Africa, and Asia.

In 1997, Mothercare was brought to Malta by the Camilleri Group of companies, with the first store being opened in South Street Valletta. This store has since been enlarged and refurbished, bringing it to a total area of over 350 square metres.

The Mothercare presence continued to grow in Malta with the opening of 3 new stores in Sliema, Birkirkara and Gozo. Today, the Mothercare range in Malta is constantly on the increase, with more and more quality stock being brought to our shores to better satisfy our customers’ needs.
